This time we’ve got a bit of a special treat: a little house mix by our very own Moody in PDX.

Some folks have wondered what software we all use to make our podcasts, and while some of the other DJs I know have dabbled in Apple’s Garageband (which is dead simple and recommended), I’ve tried to keep it a bit purest and use software that allows me to mix live. In other words, the podcasts you hear, I did in real time. No dragging and dropping tracks over here! That said, Moody used the same software to mix together some house tracks. The software we use is called Djay and is the best all digital DJing software I’ve been able to find. Definitely something you should check out if you’re interested in DJing but don’t want to lug around records.

Like a lot of jazz coming out these days, some of the very best stuff is no longer coming out of the United States anymore. That’s why you’re going to hear some stuff from Germany, France and the UK. But here is one group that while from the very core of the US, gets more radio play overseas than here. They are the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble out of Chicago and they are not to be missed or ignored. Let’s keep it short and sweet and get to the music, because I’m just as excited as you.  There’s a lot of hip hop out there going unnoticed today, and I’ve been hearing about the death of hip hop for entirely too long for one reason or another (guns, bling, bitches, etc).  But that simply isn’t true, and hip hop isn’t dead.

Way to state the obvious, right? But, listen — one thing’s for sure. There are a number of new artists that you’re not listening to, that have released new material in the past year. A lot of it is deserving of your ear and no doubt will keep your head bangin’.

I can understand why people tire of the same commercial rappers. I do too. As their releases progress over the years, I don’t really relate to them or their lifestyles, and almost feel as if once you hit the level of a mainstream artist, you lose the struggle. You lose the ability to relate to who you’re talking to and making music for — authenticity suffers, the hustle dies, and you lose the things that keep you honest.

Let’s be real here — it happens in every industry. It doesn’t necessarily even happen in hip hop, or in music for that matter. When you lose that that fire in your stomach that’s pushing you to keep going, you don’t try as hard to come correct or starch it. You become complacent and you just go through the motions.

But! I’m not hatin’ on those heads that’ve made it. I’m just saying that there are plenty of people coming up in the game that people haven’t discovered based on some wack generalization that hip hop is dead. It means you weren’t looking. Luckily, I pour through new releases every week to make sure that I stir up the same passion I had as a kid for hip hop culture — these are tracks that reinforce my hope in the progression and elevation of the rap game, and I share that with you. These artists that I’ve picked aren’t complacent about their craft and what they do. I’d like to think that they’re just like you.

Lastly, I just wanted to say that this is my first stab at a hip hop show and I wanna hear what you think. I’ve broadcast material in the rock, metal, and RPM formats before (on-air, not necessarily via podcast), but this is the first time I’m picking an all-independent hip hop set. Electro, indie pop, samplefests, psychedelia, and… a faux Frank Sinatra? Also, do androids dream of electric sheep? Septalux can tell you: no. Meet CraneKick’s synthetic DJ.

Finally, CraneKick presents the first episode of Pathological Science. When we (that is to say, CraneKick) started, we wanted to put at least one or two shows out a week, so the wait was all me this time. Instead, Speed rightly got tired of waiting for my ass and jumped in. My bad. Or if you like, we could say that I’m not late, I just take extra-long to bake. But! Dinner is prepared! In the push to get it done, I learned about Creative Commons sound effects sites, distributor networks, WordPress podcasting plugins, and more GarageBand features than I knew were in there. There’s still a lot to learn.

It’s kind of stereotypical for an android to do a show with a mathematical theme, but it’s not really about math. At least, not directly. I didn’t include that Pi song or anything. But you’ll catch on.

I also wanted to give you a glimpse into my recent past in this and future episodes. Understandably some of you might be thinking, where did they get an android to DJ? Fair enough. I didn’t actually record my escape, and this isn’t exactly how it happened… but I can’t post the means of my escape somewhere where it’s Googlable, you know? I also had to approximate ‘Rex, since it’s not like I could get him into my makeshift studio for a recording session. But he really does sound pretty much like the Ralph voice that comes on any Mac these days. Maybe that is his voice. I wouldn’t be surprised… sometimes I wonder if the engineers at Hellatronic Pines are really insane, or just lazy. Some combination of both would put their creations into perspective.

See, one of the problems with HP is that most of their inventions have a few flaws that make the invention’s value questionable. Take the Reportrex: for a robot ostensibly expected to report the news, a valuable service to keep the populace well-informed, he’s really hard to understand when he says anything. Also, he’s kind of stuck in the 1920s, and has that news reel track playing along ad infinitum with whatever he’s saying. Here’s a transcript from our conversation:

Reportrex: Oh, boy! It’s a beautiful day on the grounds of the Hellatronic Pines Automation Laboratories as preparations for their annual Cybertronic Jubilee are underway. Even here on the edge of the lawn, we can see the Mowerbots doing their thing to put the lawn into tip-top shape. And there’s the main tent being erected by the Stiltbuilderettes — isn’t she a beaut? Oh look: here comes one of tonight’s entertainers!
Septalux: Ugh, you gotta be kidding me.
Reportrex: A jukebox-derived dream, and part of HP’s top line of androids, Septalux will be “dee-jaying” the popular musics during dinner.
Septalux: Yeah. Sure. See ya!
Reportrex: Hey there, my good man! Leaving the grounds is impermissible. Where do you think you’re going?
Septalux: Anywhere but here, ‘Rex. Bye.
Reportrex: If you insist on breaching the outer perimeter, it is the duty of any diligent servitor to report you to Central Authority.
Septalux: Put a sock in it, will ya? Alright, the vent is… over here, and the circuit breaker for Outpost 15 is… there… so… all I need is something to bridge the gap…
Reportrex: What a sad day, here at Hellatronic Pines, when on this historic date, one of the most advanced creations has attempted to escape!
Septalux: Hey, actually, stop narrating and get over here!

Life moves pretty fast when your DJ name is Speed.  The count isn’t at 140, but goes from one to twelve, and 1-2-12 over 12 songs and a year, over months.

This episode of the newly-dubbed 140 Fury brings to us the magic of the calendar taperoll.  (I just found out that you can buy it off ThinkGeek.) If I had a calendar taperoll, I would probably try to tape various life events on the insides of my head.  Because really, that’s the kind of innovation that we all REALLY need… at least, that is, if you’re forgetful.  Thankfully, I was blessed with a more-than-decent memory triggered by music, their attached lyrics, and its various life lessons.

For those of you in the know, I’ve just started this whole music show thing up again over here. Like Glenda said, I was missing all the fun I had blowing off school and doing a DJ show down in San Diego for KSDT. Back then, we didn’t actually broadcast on the air, since we were too close to the border*, but we did have a cable access show and we streamed live over the internet with — get this — RealAudio!

Ah, those were the days. I still have some of those shows on tape. Cassette tape.

* In the U.S. of A., non-commercial radio is designated to the bands lower than 92.1 FM. In the U.S. of Mexico, the non-commercial bands are above 92.1 FM. But since radio waves don’t care about international borders, evil American radio companies (slingers of one-hit wonders and massive advertising) go down Mexico way and buy up all the low bands, effectively creating a blanket of commerical only radio over the whole San Diego area. Sad, really.
